The Journey of a Garment – Systems Mapping Miro Template

Pick an item of clothing you love – do you recognize the journey it has been on to make its way into your closet? Where were the raw materials for it sourced? Where was it made, and who made the piece of clothing? Imagine if your cherished wardrobe items could talk – what stories would they share about their journey?

As part of our self-drected Explorations, Fabrics of Time, we developed an interactive systems mapping activity and Miro template.

In this community activity, discover the journey of a garment through systems mapping. Understand the various people, places, processes and policies that bring it into existence and into your life. We hope that learning about this long journey and value chain will make you aware of the impact that the fashion industry has on the well-being of people and the planet.

Expand your mind and grapple with some big questions that underpin the apparel industry and brainstorm some actions we can take to create an impact.

Find the Miro template here!

How it works:

  1. Gather a small group or arrange break-out groups of 4 people
  2. Split up into 3 groups, representing a different type of garment or fashion item (feel free to customize and add your own).
  3. Create your systems map (20 mins)
In teams, use visual mapping techniques to explore the elements and the journey of your garment. Consider:
How do elements relate and influence each other?
     What are the relationships?
Who is involved? At a micro and macro level?
Brainstorm, research, and ideate – your systems maps will not be final!
  4. Identify leverage points (15 mins)
What are points / relationships in the system where we can make improvements? Which are the most impactful areas?
  5. Share back. (10 mins)
What did you learn? What did you know?
What similarities or differences are there across garments?
